Day 3

Glastonbury and Wells

Got Travel Insurance? - Accidents happen.  A couple was forced to cancel the rest of the tour today and return home the next day; the wife broke her foot after she fell over another tourist's luggage at the Roman Baths. It was a shocking misfortune to occur so early in the tour.  I was sad to see them go.

We loaded the tour bus for the first time today to go on a day trip. Our first stop was Hecks Farmhouse Cider to get drinks for our picnic lunch.  Then, it was on to Glastonbury and Wells.  I was very taken with Glastonbury Abbey.  It is one of those places you definitely have to experience in person. There is a wondrous feel to the space that pictures just cannot capture.  Wells Cathedral was my favorite of all the churches I visited on the tour.  I liked it best because it was a good size and had the right amount of grandeur for me.  The light, neutral tones and graceful curves of the interior created a beautifully serene atmosphere that appealed to me.  The steps leading to the Chapter House were especially striking, and they are the same steps expertly captured by Frederick H. Evans in his famous photograph, A Sea of Steps.
